We at Sanctions SOS are committed to making a better world through the promotion of a green agenda, to supporting equality, eliminating discrimination, building a better local, national and international community. We seek not just to carry out initiatives to support these desires but also to bring this passion into our day-to-day work in sanctions. Whether this is through the promotion of peace and security by supporting the implementation and enforcement of global sanctions, to thinking creatively about the use of sanctions to further ESG ends such as promoting countries and multilateral organisations to adopt sanctions to tackle the illegal wildlife trade, deforestation and other deliberate acts designed to harm the environment in the name of profit and vanity
We are always looking for more good causes to support and are keen to ensure that we can have a truly positive global reach in our ESG work.
Ever since our founder's days working on climate change policy for the UK Government, with a particular focus on climate vulnerable countries like the Small Island States, this has been an issue close to his heart. Since then other members of the Sanctions SOS team have also worked on climate related issues, such as the plight of climate led migration, and Adaptation.
We work hard at Sanctions SOS to minimise our carbon footprint, help protect the environment and promote conservation.
Internally we recycle all printer cartridges and batteries used by the company. We also recycle all paper waste, packaging, plastics, cans and glass. We encourage staff to decrease use of plastic water bottles by providing re-usable bottles for staff.
We also seek to minimise waste from the inevitable coffee runs by providing staff with re-usable coffee mugs.
We also encourage our staff to recycle their own printer cartridges and batteries.
Sanctions SOS is committed to being carbon neutral. As part of this we are signed up to the carbon offsetting scheme run by Ecologi.
In using Ecologi we ensure that a number of trees are planted for all of the printing we do. Also that the carbon impact of our staff members and the travel they do is offset.
For more information on Ecologi please visit their website at: Become Climate Positive with Ecologi | Ecologi .
You can also access the Sanctions SOS site and forest with Ecologi by clicking on the below button.
Sanctions SOS uses electricity provided by renewable sources as part of our commitment to the environment and sustainability.
Using renewable energy to power the work of Sanctions SOS is incredibly important to us. From the work our founder did with countries like Bangladesh and Guyana, looking at the development of hydroelectricity, and Barbados and Fiji on wind farms, clean renewable energy has a vital role to play in ensuring the global economy shifts from being fossil fuel based.
As part of the offsetting Sanctions SOS does with Ecologi we have also been keen to ensure that funding goes to the development of clean renewable energy.
Chester Zoo is one of the largest Zoo's in Europe and has often been noted as one of the best in the world. As well as being a fantastic Zoo and place for children and adults to be introduced to the different species of animals, insects, birds, and fishes we share this world with, Chester Zoo maintains a breeding programme for extremely vulnerable species with the aim of helping to re-populate these species in their native lands. Roughly half of the species at Chester Zoo are on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List. The zoo maintains breeding programmes for the Congo Buffalo, Jaguar, Gemsbok, Black Rhino, Sumatran Tiger, Ecuadorian Amazon Parrot and Madagascan Tree Boa, amongst others. The breeding programme forms just one of the four pillars of Chester Zoos conservation work, the others being working with countries to create a safe natural habitat for them wildlife in their countries. Working with people to enable them to co-exist and thrive with wildlife and develop nature-friendly, sustainable lifestyles and livelihoods. And finally leading the charge on conservation advocacy.
Based not far from Sanctions SOS' home in the North-West we are proud to provide regular donations to Chester Zoo to further their work as well as seeking other opportunities to support them.

The Barbados Environmental Conservation Trust (BECT) is a Bajan charity committed to tackling climate change and conservation. The particular focus of the BECT is the unique island of Barbados as one would expect, which is home to a diverse ecology and some inspirational creatures such as the Green Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle and Flying Fish. As an island Barbados is particularly vulnerable to the effects of Climate Change, from rising sea levels to the increasing frequency of Tropical Storms and Hurricanes. The BECT is part of the wider Conservation Collective bringing together organisations from across the World, including Spain, Britain, Cyprus, Kenya, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia.
Sanctions SOS is proud to work with BECT as a partner of theirs making regularly donations, working with the BECT to amplify their fund-raising efforts and highlight their campaigns. We hope in the future to be able to partner with the BECT on specific campaigns, run our own fund-raising events on their behalf, and provide a platform to share their news.
If you would like more information on the BECT please follow this link.

This year’s UN Women theme for International Women’s Day is “Digitall: Innovation and technology for gender equality”. Despite much of modern-day life revolving around technological integration, and internet usage, 37% of women do not use the internet. When women do access the internet often, they do not feel safe, which further hampers their abilities to engage meaningfully in technology allowing them to develop the necessary digital skills. Further to this the UN estimates that by 2050, 75% of all jobs will be related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) areas. Currently women hold too few of these roles, for example in the field of artificial intelligence women hold just 22% of positions.
Given this we are proud to announce today that Sanctions SOS has donated to Girls in Tech, Inc., who work to encourage more women in the STEM fields globally, especially technology. You can find out more about the work of Girls in Tech through the following link:
Working together we can ‘Crack the code’ and deliver ‘Innovation for a gender equal future’.

Additionally, in the experience of our CEO, Ian Bolton, both in the fields of counter-proliferation and sanctions there are too few women involved. We would like to highlight two initiatives by two of our close friends who are promoting women’s involvement in sanctions work.
These initiatives are:
UK Finance’s Women in Sanctions – founded by Anila Haleem, more information can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eGkBX--G.
The second is C5’s Women in Sanctions Network – led by Rachel Dichter Lewyn, more information can be found here: https://lnkd.in/ewcXmeYk.
Wishing women everywhere a happy International Women’s Day!
Sanctions SOS was shocked to discover that over 500,000 children in the UK don't have a bed to sleep in. The Absolute Radio bed appeal, working with Cash for Kids and Bensons for Beds, is seeking to raise awareness and funding to provide beds for these children. We are proud to support Absolute Radio and Cash for Kids by donating beds to their campaign.
We'd like to take this opportunity to encourage any of our followers who are in a position to help to consider donating. This specific drive will be closing tomorrow - in which Bensons for Beds are providing beds at cost price. However, if you still wish to donate beyond this I'm certain Cash for Kids will welcome any support.
